We often are asked will Wells ever amount to any thing much; will it ever be a town; what about freight rates; and many other questions. But let us answer facts in the matter.

Wells is located just six miles West of Bonlee on the Bonlee and Western rail road and is in the heart of Chatham’s best rabbit section. There were thousands of Chatham rabbits brought here and sold to the merchants during the season just closed and this summer promises a good business in the chicken and egg trade; and what Wells needs is a good live awake man to come with us and open up a produce business as we have plenty of chickens, eggs, butter and good old country hams for the market in summer season and an addition of rabbits and birds and sometimes a wild turkey in winter season.

We greatly regret to hear of the deaths of two of the Confederate drum corps at Raleigh. The two snare or kettle drummers, A.H. Haynes and W.D. Smith, both died last week. The only other two members of the corps are the fifer and the bass drummer. All of them had expected to attend the ‘unveiling’ on Friday.

We much regret to hear of the death of Rev. O.T. Edwards, which occurred at his home near Mr. Vernon Springs, on last Thursday. He was one of the ablest and most prominent preachers in the Sandy Creek Baptist Association, and for several years taught school.

The revenue officers who shot Mr. Alick Allen, in Baldwin township a few weeks ago, have been arrested at Durham and will have a premilinary trial before G.W. Riggsbee, J.P., in Riggsbee township, next Saturday. Mr. Allen is recovering from his wound, and will not lose his leg.

Chatham Record, 1888-04-12: FARMERS’ ALLIANCE

The Farmers’ Alliances of Chatham held a county meeting in the court-house, on last Friday. As the meeting was private — only members of the Alliance being admitted — we are not able to publish any account of its proceedings. We hear, however, that about one-hundred delegates were present, and that there are thirty-five sub alliances in this county, containing an average, each, of forty members, so that the organization is a power in Chatham and can be used for the accomplishment of great good not only to its members but to the county generally.

The only business of a public nature transacted at the meeting on last Friday, so far as we informed, was the passage of the following resolutions, which we are requested to publish:

“WHEREAS, we the Farmers’ Alliance of Chatham county have heard with sincere regret, of the loss that Sheriff Brewer has sustained from the defalcation of the officers of the State National Bank at Raleigh: Therefore

RESOLVED 1. That we take pleasure in expressing our unabated confidence in his honesty, faithfulness and integrity as an officer and extend to him our hearty sympathy.

RESOLVED 2. That believing in the merits and justice of his case we commend the matter, for his relief, to the next Legislature.”
